Selbstdarstellung und Sexualität
(Self-Reflection and Sexuality)
My basic assumption is an increasing significance of cultural patterns of self-reflection and self-monitoring in the last four decades, especially in the context of the psycho-therapeutic movement since the 1960s. In addition, the therapeutic discourse has reached everyday life. At least among better educated social groups patterns of self-reflection are widespread, people seem to be well-trained in a special way to be aware of themselves, to monitor their selves.
This kind of self reflection and self control now affects also sexuality and intimacy. Sexuality and intimacy became a main focus of identity formation, and therefore also subject of the therapeutic discourse. There is a need for self-monitoring and analyzing one's own sexual behavior and thinking. And if there happens to be a self-diagnosis of some deficiencies, one should take into account to look for a therapist. Meanwhile, therapy is considered not only in case of diagnosed deficiencies, but in a more general way for self-reflection. On the other side, self-reflection on sexuality is no longer dominated by questions of morality and medical normalcy, rather by self-fulfillment and self-realization.

Studied (Ph.D.) at Frankfurt/M.; subsequently taught and researched at universities in Klagenfurt (Austria), Berlin (Freie Universität), Philadelphia (University of Pennsylvania), Mannheim, Freiburg ,and Lüneburg. - Research fields: family and couple relations, culture sociology, sociological theory, qualitative methods, individualization and self-reference, sociology of body and emotions.
