Oswalt Kolle, Amsterdam:
Hilfe bei sexuellen Problemen in den Niederlanden
(Help with Sexual Problems in the Netherlands)
The author considers the cultural differences between The Netherlands and Germany and explains why a structurally different and very pragmatic counseling approach is successful in the Netherlands. A highly secular society with an extremely sharp separation between state and church forms the basis for dealing with sexual problems without ideology, individual-oriented, and very calmly relaxed. This accounts for striking differences between both neighboring countries. While in Germany there are, aside from a few private therapists, initiatives or institutes maintained by sexological societies (like the DGSS-Institute for Sexual Counseling), only the counseling offices of Pro Familia and Deutsche Aidshilfe (German AIDS Help) - both of which had their public financial assistance funds reduced -, people in The Netherlands meet with a wide support net: from family doctors and GPs schooled by continuing education to numerous publicly funded institutions. The author deals with the practical results of this system as well as its ongoing deficits.
